Galeru

Ngarinyin · numen · Ngarinyin traditional religion; continuing · numen

Galeru, also written Galaru, is a serpent personage of the sky associated with the fiercest of the seasonal weather, the cyclonic rains and the lightning that accompany the height of the wet. Where Ungud is the serpent of the earth's permanent waters and Walanganda the calm sky of the Milky Way, Galeru embodies the storm's destructive edge. Sources differ on whether Galeru is a distinct being or a dangerous aspect of the great rainbow-serpent Ungud, the serpent imagery of water, sky and storm being closely bound together across the Kimberley.
