Kanmari is the mullet man of the Kondoli fire narrative. With Kuratje the tommy ruff man he was sent as a messenger to summon Kondoli the whale-man to the dance at which the people planned to take his fire. In the transformation that followed, Kanmari became the mullet; because he was dressed in a kangaroo skin, his fish has oily flesh, distinguishing it from the drier tommy ruff into which his companion Kuratje was changed.
