Fakahoko

Niuean · deity · Niuean traditional religion; continuing · deity

Fakahoko is one of the tupua of Niue, named in the standard lists of the principal gods alongside Fao, Huanaki and Lagi-atea, and sometimes given the alternative name Talimainuku. He belongs to the company of tupua who, in the Pulekula tradition, left the lost land of Fonuagalo because they felt unrecognised at its feasts and came to Niue; while Fao and Huanaki are the active makers of the island, Fakahoko is among the gods who came after them to take up residence on the finished land. He is a less individuated figure than the two creators but is consistently enumerated as one of the founding tupua.
