Fitsakajich

Nivaclé · deity · Nivaclé traditional religion; continuing · deity

Fitsakajich, glossed roughly as 'our grandfather,' is a celestial being invoked as a benevolent power above. Oblate missionaries adopted the name to render the Christian God, and sources differ on how far the pre-mission Nivaclé conceived of him as a true creator or supreme deity rather than as one sky-dweller among many. He is associated with the sky and with a well-disposed, ordering presence rather than with the appetite-driven exploits ascribed to Cufalh.
