Jivec'la, the Moon

Nivaclé · deity · Nivaclé traditional religion; continuing · deity

Jivec'la, the Moon, measures the months and is linked in Nivaclé thought to women's menstrual cycles. As across much of the Chaco, the moon is imagined as a male figure of appetite whose markings and phases are explained through narrative, its waxing and waning read as recurrent wounding and recovery.
