Qutlı-Qıya

Nogai · mortal · Nogai traditional religion; continuing · mortal

Qutlı-Qıya (Kutlukaya) is the noble father of Edige in the Nogai and wider Kipchak epic. A trusted bey at the court of Toqtamish, he is falsely suspected, or refuses to surrender the peri-woman coveted by the khan, and is put to death. His unjust killing is the founding wrong of the Edige cycle, transforming his orphaned son into the sovereign's lifelong enemy and avenger.
