Charnok Woman

Noongar · deity · dreaming creator era · deity

The Charnok (Charrnock) Woman, also recorded under the name Junda, is described by Whadjuk Noongar elder and storyteller Noel Nannup as the strongest spirit of the South West, a tall being with long white hair reaching down her back. Walking the land in the darkness of the Dreaming, she found spirit children looking up at her and placed them in her hair, gathering more as she travelled; crossing the great valley the Waugal had made, now the Swan River, she left her footprint at Blackwall Reach. In the night sky her white hair is the Milky Way and the stars are the spirit children she carries. Some versions present her as a loving maternal carer; others as a fearsome spirit who collected children for the Charnok Man of the cave near Katter Kich (Wave Rock).
