The piece of whetstone stays in Thor's head for the rest of the mythology, which is the sort of detail the Norse material keeps and most traditions would tidy away. The duel is a hólmganga — a formal, legal single combat with rules and seconds — and the giant's second is a clay man nine leagues high who wets himself when he sees Thor coming. The registry held the god and none of his opponents.
