Night is a giantess and Day is her son by one of the gods, and night rides first. Germanic peoples counted time in nights rather than days — a fortnight is fourteen nights — and the mythology says why: the dark is older, and the light is descended from it. The frost on the grass in the morning is from her horse's bit.
