Útgarða-Loki
Norse · numen · mythic prehistoric · numen
The only story in the corpus in which Thor is beaten, and he is beaten by stagecraft: the cat he cannot lift is the world serpent, the old woman who wrestles him to one knee is old age, the horn he cannot drain is the sea, and he did better than anyone could have. The Norse position on their own strongest god is that the world is bigger than he is and he is not told so to his face until he has left. The shared name with Loki is unexplained and this record does not explain it.
