Kir

Nuer · mortal · mythic · mortal

Kir, remembered as Kir Kakeer, is the legendary apical ancestor of the Jikany Nuer, the ancestor of the Gaajok and Gaajak sections in particular. According to the origin story first written down by C. H. Stigand in 1919 and later examined by Evans-Pritchard and by the Nuer historian Gabriel Giet Jal, Kir came into the world out of a calabash gourd that was broken open by Gee, the first ancestor of the Nuer, among whose people the foundling was reared. His descendants form the Gaatgankir ('children of Kir'), the dominant clan of the Jikany tribes, whose sacred spear is associated with the war-spirit Wiu. The tale Stigand recorded links Kir with a sacred white spear, an emblem consistent with the later importance of spear symbolism among his descendants.
