Sisiutl

Nuxalk (Bella Coola) · numen · Nuxalk (Bella Coola) traditional religion; continuing · numen

Sisiutl is the double-headed serpent, one of the most potent supernatural beings of the Northwest Coast, bearing a serpent head at each end of its body and a central face. Widely represented among the Kwakwaka'wakw and echoed among the Haida, Tlingit, Tsimshian, Nuu-chah-nulth and Nuxalk, it is a creature of the waters and of dangerous power: to see or touch it unprepared is deadly, yet mastery of it confers great supernatural strength and protection. It can change its shape, and its image guards those who have won its favour.
