Kirimu is the monstrous dragon of the epic, described with multiple heads, horns, and teeth, a huge devouring beast that swallows people and animals whole. It is the beloved companion of the lightning-divinity Nkuba, who keeps it in the sky. When Mwindo confronts and boastfully slays Kirimu, he splits open its belly to release those it had consumed alive. The killing of Nkuba's favourite is the hero's decisive act of hubris: enraged, Nkuba seizes Mwindo and bears him aloft to endure the celestial trials that finally teach him humility.
