Nyamurairi is a supreme divinity of Nyanga religion, associated with fire, the volcano, and the subterranean world of the dead, and named as leader of the Bashumbu spirits. He is reckoned among the highest of the Nyanga gods, a lord of the fiery underworld to whom the fate of the dead is bound. His prominence stands somewhat apart from the narrative of the Mwindo epic, whose action centres on the water, earth, and sky powers; sources differ on how his supremacy is weighed against that of the creator Ongo, some traditions treating fire and the volcanic underworld as the ultimate seat of divine authority in the mountainous, volcano-ringed Nyanga homeland.
