Mashtinge, the Rabbit, is the benevolent culture-hero of the Omaha and Ponca cycle recorded by Dorsey. Living with his grandmother, he rids the world of devouring monsters, among them the man-eating hill and the grizzly, and secures conditions favorable to human life. Where Ictinike embodies selfish cunning, the Rabbit's trickery is turned to protection, and his exploits are told as the deeds that made the earth habitable for the people.
