Wakandagi is a water-monster of Omaha belief, a horned, serpent- or panther-like being dwelling in rivers and deep pools. Dorsey's study of Siouan cults associates it with the powers beneath the earth and water, perilous to those who transgress against them; its name shares the root of wakonda, marking it as an uncanny power rather than an ordinary animal. In the wider Dhegiha avenger cycles such water-beings are the adversaries whom mourning culture-heroes destroy.
