Mise

Orphic · deity · Orphic traditional religion; continuing · deity

Mise is summoned in the forty-second Orphic hymn from wherever she happens to be — Eleusis, Phrygia, Cyprus, Egypt — which is a convention of the form rather than a list of her sanctuaries. She belongs to the mystery vocabulary, and her name is not securely Greek. Like Hipta and Melinoe she was for a long time a goddess who existed only inside a book of hymns; inscriptions from western Asia Minor then showed that she had been worshipped there. Melinoe is already in this registry, and admitting her while leaving out the other two would have been inconsistent.
