Evening Star

Osage · deity · Osage traditional religion; continuing · deity

The Evening Star is the star of the western twilight, reckoned the female star and the counterpart of the male Morning Star. In the Osage genesis the ancestors who lived among the stars were counseled by four powers, the god of Day, the god of Night, the male star, and the female star, before they came down to the earth. She is numbered among the star people, children of the Sun and Moon, and her pairing with the Morning Star expresses the male and female balance that runs through Osage cosmology.
