Wakonda

Osage · deity · Osage traditional religion; continuing · deity

Wakonda is the mysterious, unseen creative power at the center of Osage religion. Neither wholly a person nor a mere abstraction, it is the silent life-giving force believed to reside in the blue sky, the clouds, the sun, moon, and stars, and in the earth and its waters, bringing all living things into being. Osage thought holds that the ordering of the cosmos into the realms of air, land, and water, and the uniting of the ancestral divisions into a single people, proceeded from Wakonda. In ritual speech the power is addressed under many aspects, so that the sun, the moon, and the morning star may each be spoken of as a manifestation of the one Wakonda.
