Her name says what she is: the Goddess of Birth. The reference literature connects her with the Roman Geneta Mana, an obscure deity of birth and of the dead who received a puppy in sacrifice, and the connection is plausible on the name alone. The Agnone Tablet places her among the recipients of a grain sanctuary, which is a reminder that Italic agrarian cult did not separate the fertility of the field from that of the household.
