Re'yo

Piaroa · numen · Piaroa traditional religion; continuing · numen

Re'yo is a keeper of the game animals in Piaroa hunting cosmology, the owner who releases or withholds the herds of the forest and who, when slighted, sends sickness upon the careless hunter. Through him the taking of game is bound to a relation of exchange and restraint with the powers that own the animals, a relation the shaman mediates. The name and the degree to which this game-owner is individuated vary considerably across the recorded material, and some tellings fold the mastery of animals into Wahari or into the wild spirit-beings of the Warime rather than naming a distinct keeper.
