Mumba is the second of the Wati Kutjara, the Two Men, bearing the black goanna as his totem while his companion Kurukadi carries the light goanna. Inseparable from his brother, Mumba shares the whole of their immense Dreaming journey across the Western Desert, in which the pair named the waterholes, ranges, and sacred sites, instituted the initiation ceremonies, and enforced the marriage law. The two are so consistently paired in narrative that they are usually invoked together as a single ancestral agency, the Two Men, and their track is among the longest and most widely known of the desert songlines documented among Pitjantjatjara and neighbouring groups.
