Aê Du is the sky-god named alongside Aê Diê in the standing formula Aê Du Aê Diê, by which the Ede address the highest creative power. In prayer and in the opening of the customary-law chants the two grandfather-gods are called together, and Aê Du is generally taken to be the elder of the pair, sharing with Aê Diê the making of the world and the upholding of the order that the yang enforce among the living. Where accounts distinguish them, Aê Du stands slightly apart as the senior figure, but the tradition most often treats the two as inseparable aspects of a single supreme authority.
