Hơ Bhị

Rade (Ede) · mortal · Rade (Ede) traditional religion; continuing · mortal

Hơ Bhị is the younger of the two sisters married to Đăm Săn under the juê nuê obligation. With her elder sister Hơ Nhị she holds the wealth of a great matriline, and her fate is joined to her sister's throughout the epic: both are carried off by rival chiefs, both die when the hero fells the sacred smuk tree, and both are revived by the remedy he brings down from the sky-lord Aê Diê. The pairing of the two sister-wives reflects the Ede rule that a man taking a wife from a house may also be bound to her sister, and that succession runs through the women of the line.
