The Sun-Goddess is the radiant female deity who dwells in a great house in the east, the object of Đăm Săn's final and most reckless enterprise. Having become the mightiest of chiefs, the hero resolves that only she is a fit wife and travels across the world to her dwelling to press his suit. She receives him but refuses to become his wife, warning that were she to leave her appointed place the earth would burn, crops wither and every living thing die. Rebuffed, Đăm Săn turns homeward and is swallowed with his horse in the mire of the Black Mud Forest, so that his death is the direct consequence of reaching for the Sun. Sources differ on her proper Rade name, giving her variously as the deity of the sun, Yang Hruê, or simply the Sun-woman; Vietnamese retellings call her Nữ Thần Mặt Trời.
