Hiro

Rapa Nui · deity · mythic · deity

Hiro is the Rapa Nui god of wind and rain and the brother of Tangaroa. The rain was held to be his weeping: in drought the islanders chanted 'E te uá, matavai-roa a Hiro-é' — 'O rain, great tears of Hiro' — and summoned him with the pierced stone trumpet, the Pu o Hiro, in their rain- and fertility-rites.
