'Ataganga

Rennell & Bellona · demigod · Rennell & Bellona traditional religion; continuing · demigod

'Ataganga is the father of the culture hero Mautikitiki in the oral traditions of Rennell and Bellona. His name corresponds to the Maui-father figures Ataraga and Atalanga of eastern and western Polynesia, and his part in the local cycle is chiefly to be the parent whose secret movements between the human world and the powers beyond the boy Mautikitiki spies out and imitates, setting several of the hero's exploits in motion. He belongs to the ancestral, half-divine generation from which the transformer-hero springs.
