Rennell & Bellona · deity · Rennell & Bellona traditional religion; continuing · deity

Tepoutu'uingangi is the male of the two original stone deities of Bellona and the brother of Nguatupu'a. His name is understood as 'the post that stands in the sky', suggesting a pillar joining earth and heaven. Like his sister he was believed to have come from the ancestral land 'Ubea and to have entered a great stone at the sacred and tabu place of Ngabenga. The paired stones of brother and sister were among the most feared of Bellonese holy sites, embodying the ancient powers that held the island before the human settlers arrived.
