Furrina

Furrina is the best illustration in Roman religion of ritual outliving meaning. Her cult was old enough that she had one of the fifteen flamens, a priesthood reserved for the most ancient gods, and her festival was still being kept on 25 July in the late Republic — by which time, as Varro's generation admitted, nobody could say what she was for. Modern reading makes her a goddess of springs, from a name connected with moving water. Her grove on the Janiculum is remembered chiefly because Gaius Gracchus died in it.
