Pax comes late to the Roman pantheon and arrives as propaganda. Peace for a Roman was not the absence of war but a settlement imposed and then kept, and the regime that had ended a century of civil war made her its own: Augustus built the Ara Pacis on the Campus Martius and put the whole argument of his rule on its reliefs. Vespasian, who also came to power out of civil war, gave her a temple. The date of her cult is later than the Republican virtues in this batch, and the record's era reflects that.
