Spes
Roman · deity · middle republic · deity
Spes is hope, vowed a temple in the middle of the First Punic War by a commander who needed some. She is shown on coins holding out a flower bud and lifting the hem of her dress to walk quickly — a young figure in motion toward something not yet arrived. Under the emperors she became Spes Augusta, the dynasty's hope, which is a narrower thing than the one the Republic prayed to.
