Vediovis

Vediovis is Jupiter turned inside out: the name reads as a negative or a diminutive of Iovis, and the god is chthonic where Jupiter is celestial. He came to Rome from Etruria — the Etruscan Vetis, recorded in this registry, lies behind the name — and he kept a temple in the saddle between the two summits of the Capitol, which is to say in the middle of the city's most sacred ground. What he was actually asked for is not well recorded; the Romans themselves seem to have grown unsure.
