Tushed ryshba

Rutul · numen · Rutul traditional religion; continuing · numen

Tushed ryshba is a benevolent domestic spirit of the Rutuls, a kindly household power whose special charge is carpet-weaving — one of the defining crafts of Rutul women. Against the many hostile night- and childbirth-demons of the tradition she stands as a friendly presence of the home, and her association with the loom ties the older cult of household guardians to the living material culture of Rutul weaving.
