Kada is the deified sun of the Sara, the divine power most closely associated with the remote creator and the great object of Sara sun-veneration noted by early observers. Where the creator is distant and cultless, the sun intervenes directly in human affairs: he gives fertility to the fields and, above all, fecundity to women, and he can bring harm to those who fail to honour him, which is why he alone among the celestial powers receives sacrifice and prayer. Among the Madjingaye a distinction is drawn between mbang, the ordinary word for the sun one sees, and kadə, the same sun addressed in ritual as a bearer of fertility.
