Cxekis Angelwez

Svan · numen · Svan traditional religion; continuing · numen

The Angel of the Forest is the Svan power of the wooded middle slopes, ruling the foxes, bears and other beasts of the timberland. In Charachidzé's reconstruction of the Svan hunting hierarchy he is one of the three forest gods who serve Ber Shishvlish, dividing the domains of the chase: where Apsat holds the birds and fish and Saint George the wolves and hunters, the Angel of the Forest holds the game of the woods. His title, joining the native word for forest to the Christian 'angel', is typical of the Svan pantheon's layering of older nature powers with names drawn from Orthodox Christianity.
