Ruahatu

Tahitian · deity · mythic · deity

Ruahatu is the Tahitian god of the ocean-deeps, his form that of a man with the tail (or snout) of a swordfish (a'u). His signature myth is the Ra'iātea deluge, recited to Orsmond by the priests Paora'i and Vai'au and set down by Henry: two fishermen tangle their hooks in his hair as he sleeps among the coral and wake him; enraged, he vows to drown the land, but warns them to bring their families to the islet Toa-marama, where alone they are spared as the sea rises and covers Ra'iātea. Ellis likewise records Society-Islands flood-traditions. Authored as a deity. Flagged SOLITARY: no parent, consort or sibling of Ruahatu is named in the sources — only his ocean-deep and the fishermen of the flood-tale.
