Ledu is one of two brothers, with Mahmud, in a Talysh legend of deliverance. The brothers rescue their sister and bear away from the enemy the symbol of the savior, and so come to embody for the Talysh the image of the messiah, the awaited deliverer who redeems his people. The tale belongs to the folk-heroic layer of Talysh tradition, in which named human champions carry the community's hope of rescue from oppression.
