Māriamman

Tamil folk mother-goddess (grāmadēvatā), bringer of rain and fertility and controller of epidemic diseases (especially smallpox); a fierce yet nurturing village guardian rooted in pre-Vedic Dravidian worship, later syncretized with Durga and Kali. Her name joins māri (rain/pestilence) with ammaṉ (mother).
