Long Sash is a Tewa warrior-hero whom the people see in the constellation Orion, particularly its bright belt of three stars. In the star myth he leads an oppressed people out of bondage and through great hardship on a long migration in search of a home. At a point in the sky called the Place of Decision, between two bright stars, the people pause to choose the path of life they will follow. Long Sash guides them onward and is finally set among the stars to mark the road for those who come after. Sources sometimes associate this guiding hero with Poseyemu, the culture hero of the migration, though the star-figure of Long Sash is recorded as a distinct tradition of Tewa sky lore.
