Atua i Tafua, the Deity of Tafua

Tikopian · deity · Tikopian traditional religion; continuing · deity

Atua i Tafua, 'the Deity of Tafua', is the eponymous god of the second of the four ranked clans and one of the four divine brothers descended from the primordial pair. In the Tikopian ordering of the heavens he holds the northern quarter and is held responsible for the lightning and storms that come from the north, though other great gods might also raise tempest or grant calm. He held ritual charge over the coconut, the crop said to belong with the clan of Tafua.
