Wone

Tikuna · numen · Tikuna traditional religion; continuing · numen

Wone is the primordial world-tree of Tikuna cosmology, an enormous tree whose branches spread across the entire sky and held the early world in unbroken shade. Its felling by the hero Yoi is one of the foundational acts of the cosmogony: with the tree brought down, the succession of day and night began, while its trunk, boughs and leaves were transformed into the Solimões river together with the streams and lakes of the Tikuna country. From the heart of the fallen tree grew an umari, whose fruit became the vegetal woman of the origin cycle. As an impersonal cosmic entity the tree binds together the making of the waters, the ordering of time, and the vegetal source of the human generations.
