Apadel

Tinguian · deity · mythic prehistoric · deity

Apadel, also called Kalagang, is the Tinguian (Itneg) guardian spirit who dwells in the spirit-stones known as pinaing or saksak, as recorded by Fay-Cooper Cole. These stones, of various sizes and shapes, are set on hallowed ground, frequently beneath old trees or at the entrance to a village; through them Apadel guards such sacred spots, the community, and the creatures of the forest. The stones receive offerings and anointing with oil so that the spirit will continue to shield the people from harm. Cole attests no kin, spouse, or peer relation for Apadel.
