Mother Who Causes Earthquakes

Toraja · deity · primordial / creation · deity

Indo' Ongon-Ongon is a goddess of the underside of the world in the cosmology of the Sa'dan Toraja. She is the ill-tempered wife of Pong Tulak Padang, the god who carries the earth in the palms of his hands and who, together with Puang Matua in the world above, keeps the world of humankind in equilibrium, separating night from day. When Indo' Ongon-Ongon is angered or out of humour she upsets that equilibrium and the earth quakes, for which reason she is greatly feared. She thus embodies, within the household of the earth-bearer, the ever-present threat of seismic disorder in the mountainous Toraja homeland.
