Soborom is the great solfatara of the western Tibesti, a field of steaming vents, boiling mud and warm mineral pools on the southern flank of the Tousside massif. In Teda belief it is a place charged with spirit-presence, approached with caution and visited by the sick, who submit to its hot vapours and mud in hope of a cure. Ethnographers of the Tibesti describe it as among the most notable of the sacred and dangerous sites of the range, where the ordinary sense of an inhabited, watchful landscape is at its most concentrated. Sources differ over how far the healing sought there is attributed to a distinct resident spirit and how far to the potency of the ground itself.
