Dzavana is the primordial first woman of Tsonga origin tradition, wife of Gwambe. With him she belongs to the myth of the reed from which the first people are said to have come forth. As with her husband, the antiquity of the name is uncertain, and cognate forms are attested among related peoples; the pairing preserves the widespread Bantu image of a first couple emerging at the beginning of the world.
