Mzila

Tsonga · mortal · Tsonga traditional religion; continuing · mortal

Mzila, a son of Soshangane, won the throne of Gaza after a war of succession with his brother Mawewe and reigned from about 1861 until 1884. He shifted the centre of the empire northward toward the Zambezi highlands and consolidated Nguni rule over the Tsonga populations of the interior and the coast. He was the father of Ngungunyane, the last independent king of Gaza.
