Chikang'ombe

Tumbuka · numen · mythic · numen

The great snake/python sky-divinity of the Tumbuka highlands, served at hill-shrines (Chikang'ombe hill in Nkhamanga; Mwanda hill on the Malawi–Zambia border) by Mkandawire-clan priests, associated with rain and lightning, and the medium through whom the high god Chiuta/Leza was approached; women were dedicated to him as his spirit-wives. Authored as a numen in the 'mythic' era. SOLITARY: no named divine parent, sibling, consort or offspring is attested — his tie to Chiuta is the medium-to-high-god cult relationship (in domains/faculties), and the spirit-wives are dedicated human women (a cult institution, in materialCulture/faculties), neither of which is a kin edge — so none is asserted. The vimbuza healing spirits (the basis of the UNESCO-inscribed vimbuza dance) are a separate class/cult, not this figure.
