Ashyk Aýdyň Pir is the patron saint of Turkmen minstrels and singers. Tradition places him in the eleventh or twelfth century and preserves his memory at a mausoleum in the Daşoguz region of northern Turkmenistan. Aspiring bagshy make pilgrimage there, sleeping on its threshold in the hope that the pir will appear in a dream to bestow the gift and blessing of song. He is named with Baba Gammar and Gorkut Ata among the tutelary founders of the Turkmen musical tradition.
