Dïïjoma

Uitoto · demigod · Uitoto traditional religion; continuing · demigod

Dïïjoma, the serpent-eagle man, is the protagonist of one of the most fully documented Uitoto narratives, transcribed by Fernando Urbina from the telling of the elder José García. A sorcerer in search of new paths of knowledge-power, Dïïjoma seeks to enter the water and drinks a potion of the sacred vine; the metamorphosis begins with the sign of the serpent appearing on his forehead, and he becomes a boa, uniting in a single being the powers of the great water-serpent and the eagle of the air. His story links shamanic initiation, transformation, and the dangerous acquisition of power, and it is closely associated with the rock art of the Caquetá on which such serpent-beings are depicted.
