Ivwri (also spelt Iphri) is the Urhobo divinity associated with war, masculine aggression, hunting, oratorical force, vengeance and the restitution owed to the wronged. Like the Igbo ikenga to which it is often compared, Ivwri is localised in a carved shrine figure: a fierce half-human, half-animal beast with a swollen belly, gaping toothy mouth and prominent tusks, surmounted by riders and emblems of valour. Warriors and notables commissioned full figures after consulting a diviner, while children might wear miniature geometric ivwri amulets at the neck. The cult is understood to enhance and at the same time discipline aggression, making Ivwri as much a god of self-restraint and just retribution as of violence. As an Edjo divinity, Ivwri belongs to the order of beings held to be the children and emissaries of the creator Oghene.
